This study aims to explore the role of palatal rugae pattern in forensic identification by coding of palatal rugae characteristics, and to construct a forensic identification system for oral palatal rugae. One hundred models were included in this study for a systemic coding of palatal rugae pattern based on the shape, quantity, location, and distribution of palatal rugae. Among the involved 100 models, palatal rugae types varied among individuals and palatal rugae pattern was different between men and women, even between two sides in the same individual. Palatal rugae pattern can be used for forensic identification of oral soft tissue and this study proposes a new means for the identification by coding of palatal rugae pattern based on the shape, quantity,... |

ABSTRACT Lawn with grass classified as Axonopus compressus is very common in Brazil Southern region, where it normally presents an adequate low temperature tolerance and a high diversity of weed infestation. This work has aimed to conduct a phytosociological survey of weeds in lawn consisting of Axonopus compressus from CEDETEG/UNICENTRO University campus located in the Brazilian municipality of Guarapuava, in the state of Paraná, in different periods of 2013. One hundred eighty 0.50 x 0.50 m samples were collected in four months, from which parameters frequency, density, abundance, relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance and importance value index were calculated. In general, 24, 7, 17 and 14 weed species were identified, distributed in... |

Além do Citrus, o... |

Aims: To identify Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio alginolyticus using standardized DNA extraction method and real-time PCR assays, among a large number of bacterial strains isolated from marine environment. Methods and Results: Methods for DNA extraction and real-time PCR were standardized to identify a large number of Vibrio spp. strains isolated through regular collection campaigns of environmental samples. Three real-time PCR assays were developed from a multiplex PCR, targeting V. vulnificus, V. cholerae and V. alginolyticus on the dnaJ gene. After testing their specificity, these systems were applied for the identification of 961 strains isolated at 22°C (446 strains) and 37°C (515 strains) in September 2009. The predominance of V.... |

The Neotropical species of Genea Rondani, 1850 (Diptera, Tachinidae, Tachininae, Leskiini) are revised by the examination of type-material of almost all species and a large material deposited in many scientific collections. G. australis (Townsend), G. brasiliensis (Townsend), G. gracilis James, G. jaynesi (Aldrich), G. major (Townsend), G. pellucens (Curran), G. tenuirostris (James), G. trifaria (Wiedemann) were keyed and redescribed with the first descriptions of male terminalia. G. longipalpis (Wulp) was not included in this study as no material was examined and the available data are restricted to the original description. G. glossata (Townsend) is proposed as a junior synonym of G. trifaria. G. paulistana sp. nov. from São Paulo is proposed as a new... |

Fructooligosaccharides are catalyzed by β–fructofuranosidase enzyme, produced by many microorganisms. However, in order to achieve a more profitable, low time-consuming process with lower cost, researchers have sought alternatives. This study aimed to select and identify yeasts able to produce fructooligosaccharides and evaluate the influence of pH and temperature on their synthesis. Yeast suspensions, solutions of 500 g L-1 sucrose and three values of pH (4.5, 5.5, and 6.5) and temperature (40, 50, and 60ºC) were tested. Yeast species were identified by molecular techniques. Among 141 yeast isolates from grapes, 65 were able to synthesize fructooligosaccharides. The maximum concentration of fructooligosaccharides was 4.8% (w v-1), and Saccharomyces... |

The objective of the present study was to select and identify yeasts from Brazil capable of producing carotenoids. Pigmented yeasts were isolated from soil, leaves, fruits, flowers and a processed product. The samples were incubated at 30ºC in Erlenmeyer flasks, containing YM broth. After 48 hours, they were inoculated in Petri dishes with YM agar, and incubated at 30ºC during 120 hours. The yeast colonies, which presented yellow to red coloration, were transferred to culture tubes containing YM agar, and incubated at 30ºC for 72 hours. Out of 242 samples, only five had yellow to red color at high intensity. These highly pigmented yeasts were re-isolated in Petri dishes with YM agar and then transferred to tubes with GPYM agar. Identification through... |

Candida species are the leading cause of invasive fungal infections, and over the past decade there has been an increased isolation of drug resistant Candida species. This study aimed to identify the species distribution of Candida isolates and to determine their unique antifungal susceptibility and resistance patterns. During a cross-sectional study, 209 Candida isolates (recovered from 206 clinical samples) were collected and their species distribution was determined using ChromAgar Candida. The Vitek-2 system (Biomerieux, South Africa) was used to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) to azoles (fluconazole, voriconazole), echinocandins (caspofungin, micafungin), polyenes (amphotericin B) and flucytosine. Four species of Candida were... |

Cervera atlantica, a small stoloniferan octocoral, was described as Cornularia atlantica by James Yate Johnson in 1861 from Funchal, Madeira. It then remained unrecognized until 1972 when I discovered it on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. I have since confirmed its existence at the type locality and have traced its distribution around Madeira, throughout the Canary Islands, and on Portuguese and English coasts. In the Mediterranean Sea, I have found it along Spanish and French coasts, among the Balearic Islands and on the coast of Cyprus. Cervera atlantica is cryptic and photophobic, living under stones in shallow water (usually at 0-2 m) or in crevices and caves in massive intertidal rocks, protected from direct sunlight. Intolerant of rough water, it... |
